    Description

From a local Portland estate with provenance dating to the late 1800's this is a large ceramic foo dog.  It is all hand sculpted  and has a high fired clay with overglazes in green and mustard orange.  There are a few chips missing at the base where it may have been pulled from the base of the kiln when it was originally fired over 300 years ago (see picture 9).  There is also a slight film of lime deposits on the base (see picture 10) indicating it may have been used to guard a tomb once its long lifetime.
The Foo-dog is traditionally known in China as an imperial guardian lion. It is said to be half lion and half dog with the spunk of both. They were a mythological animal that protected the spirits of ancestors past. Statues of foo dogs have traditionally stood in front of Chinese Imperial palaces and temples from the Han Dynasty (206 B.C. - 220 A.D.), and were believed to have powerful mythic protective benefits.
This foo dog measures 13" long and 13" tall by 5" wide (33 x 33 x 12.5 cm) and is in overall
    very fine condition
