    Description

This is a really great, original Civil War-era surgeon's field medical kit made by J. H. Gemrig of Philadelphia, PA. The kit contains 11 medical tools – most of them are original Gemrig brand but there are also a few different brands from the same era. List of contents:
A Gemrig tool with a hook at the end. Measures 6" long with ebony handle.
A Gemrig metal scalpel. Measures 6.5" long.
A Gemrig scalpel. Measures 5-7/8" long with a 1.5" cutting edge. Ebony handle.
A Gemrig scalpel. Measures 6" long with a 1.75" cutting edge. Ebony handle.
A Gemrig tweezer. Measures 5-3/8" long.
A retraction chain. Most likely Gemrig but no markings as there really is nowhere to stamp the name. Measures 11-3/8" long.
A nickel-plated tube. Measures 5.25" long. Not sure of the use.
A wood handle tool with needle insert. Measures 5.25" long.
A scalpel marked "Germany." Measures 5.75" long. Has a maker's mark that looks like the letters
    ELD
. Made of ebony and looks almost exact as the Gemrig's.
    A "
    yellow-tan colored"
scalpel. Measures 5.5" long. Marked with what looks like WDER and ANDA. It looks like the stamp didn't go very deep and is missing a few letters.
A pair of scissors made by John Wannamaker Henckels, Germany.
This is a smaller set that would have been carried probably by a military surgeon during the Civil War. You can still see a partial paper label on the bottom of the box but it is only about half there.
The box measures 3" x 7.25" x 1.25". It looks to be mahogany or some similar type of wood with a brass insert on the top. The brass closures are original. The box is in very nice condition but does have a fine crack towards the back of the lid. Looks like it was repaired a long time ago.
