Description
TECHNICOLOR M.P. Co. BALLON THEODOLITE Heavy Brass Transit TYPE AERO-1930-USN #81-42!*GUARANTEED VINTAGE AND ORIGINAL!
*In astronomy, a transit instrument is a small telescope with a precisely graduated mount used for the precise observation of star positions. They were previously widely used in astronomical observatories and naval observatories to measure star positions in order to compile nautical almanacs for use by mariners for celestial navigation, and observe star transits to set extremely accurate clocks (astronomical regulators) which were used to set marine chronometers carried on ships to determine longitude, and as primary time standards before atomic clocks.
*This theodolite is a friction-driven vernier balloon theodolite. Built by Technicolor Motion Picture Co. / Hollywood to meet navy specifications for pilot balloon theodolites.
*What's also interesting about this scarce piece is that it was manufactured by Technicolor. Our research has found no mention of Technicolor under any military contracts. We ask any pros out there that can further ID this piece to please email and we will post.
*This large piece with heavy brass elements weighs appx. 17 pounds.
*DIMENSIONS are 8.5" wide x 12" high - When the telescope is rotated straight up in the air the piece is 15" high. The telescope, itself, is 9" long and is sighted through an eyepiece at the side. The big brass plate is 7.5" in diameter.
*CONDITION is Very Good I would say -
